Albert Butler, Age 23

Private, 11754, 6th Battalion, King's Shropshire Light Infantry.

Albert was the eldest son of Mr Albert and Mrs Elizabeth Butler of 16 Old Park. He was a keen footballer and was the Captain of the Dawley Bank Institute Club when they won the Sir C.S Henrys Cup; he was also a well-known bird fancier.

Albert was killed in action on December 1st 1915 when a piece of shrapnel hit him in the chest killing him within seconds, at the time his battalion were holding trenches in the Lille area of the front and a few minutes later at 4.30pm, were due to be relieved by the 6th Battalion O.B.L.I, the War diary reported 1 Private KIA and 1 L/Cpl committed suicide during their tour of duty in the trenches.


Albert is buried in the Rue-David Cemetery, Fleur-Baix, in grave 1.C.23
